Tanzania is home to over 37 million people including 130 different tribes including the well-known Maasai tribe who still practice their traditional way of life. Tanzanians are friendly, peace loving people whose culture includes a deep respect for elders, enormous efforts of hospitality for guests, patience, and hard work. They enjoy exchanging many greetings and having long conversations. The phrase “Hakuna Matata” is Swahili for “No Worries” which is an attitude many Tanzanians have when dealing with problems.
Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world. The economy depends heavily on agriculture and tourism; however, due to topography and climatic conditions, a limited area of land is available for cultivated crops. The average income per year is less than $200. Approximately 1.6 million are living with AIDS in Tanzania alone.
Traveling in Tanzania is safe and quite comfortable. You can travel by private car, taxi, bus, plane or train. Public transportation is available on paved roads in most cities and people are always willing to help you find your way. The food is delicious because it is prepared with coconut milk, plantains, and spices such as masala.
